COLOURED GEMSTONES
Coloured gemstones come in an incredible variety of colours, but only a very small percentage are suitable for cutting; as rough crystals, they appear as inconspicuous, dull pebbles with colours that are hard to discern. It is only through the skilful cutting that the gemstone’s colour, transparency, and brilliance are revealed. Bringing a stone to life requires a great deal of experience and skill from the gem cutter. The value of a gemstone is primarily determined by its colour quality and purity.
Coloured gemstones with the same chemical and physical properties and crystallising in the same system are grouped into families: for example, ruby and blue sapphire are mineralogical siblings that differ only in their colour; they belong to the corundum family. Emerald and aquamarine, on the other hand, belong to the beryl family. In their pure chemical composition, most coloured stones would be colourless; they obtain their colour from small amounts of colouring elements.
GEMMOLOGY
Profession and Passion It is the privilege of Thomas Frieden and René Lauper, recently also Patrick Aeschbacher, to combine passion and business. For decades, the two gemmologists G.G. GIA and experts of the Swiss Gemmological Society, travelled regularly to gem mines and marketplaces and have built up a high reputation and a worldwide network in the countries of origin. Sourcing gems from their origins not only allows them to buy at the best prices, but also provides them with market information, such as availability, prices and trends.
